E-BORESU nº 12

This paper presents a case study that illustrates the way in which the English monarchy employed The London Gazette –a political instrument of the crown since its very inception– in order to build a strategy of “reconciliation” with an English public sphere highly suspicious of Charles II through the exaltation of England’s mediating position in the international arena. For that purpose, we will be carrying on a close reading of the treatment of the news related to certain key events, drawing on some other complementary gazettes and visual sources: the unsuccessful Peace of Cologne (1673-1674), the Treaty of Westminster (1674) and the peace conversations of Nijmegen. Lastly, some debates that arise from the hypothesis of this article will be presented as a research proposal.
